It can be confusing, but these device management types either overlap or are subsets of each other. Mobile device management is a broad term used to describe software or services that control the settings of an environment on a mobile device (smartphone/tablet running primarily Apple iOS or Android). As the name implies, MDM originally focused on smartphones and tablets, but the concept of MDM has extended to Windows PCs as well as Macs. These platforms can now be managed via MDM protocols and APIs, which allows PC operating system software updates and application software to be delivered to devices directly from the cloud via any internet connection, similar to mobile device software updating. MDM can support both personal (bring your own device [BYOD]) and corporate-owned mobile devicesin most use cases.
